---------------

Hi guys, hope everyone is safe and well.

First of all, I've spoken to the CT meetup organisers, who have decided that while social distancing is going on, we're going to combine the Jhb + CT meetups into a single online SA meetup.

Therefore, even more so than before, if you have any news to be included in the meetup around gamedev and related in South Africa, please let me know. You can get in touch with me basically anywhere, with the same handle tuism.

Then the platform: While we had a great time hanging out in Mozilla Hubs last month with people joining via desktop, phones and VR, the Hubs platform is still limited in the number of people it can connect before it starts getting glitchy (about 13). So we're going to fall back to something that allows bigger numbers. I'm looking at using a Zoom room, via a paid account (not mine). I'll release more specifics about that here when I have it.

Note the change of starting time to 17h30, because there's no more traffic in getting to places, it seems that starting earlier is preferable.

- Playtest Pitchathon (if you're playtesting a game, we ask that you give a 30 second pitch to the room about what the game is, before we all break off and play things).

Bring your games and set them up inside the auditorium before and after the meetup! (No auditorium but we'll let people setup screenshare and show what they're working on)

Board game prototypes can and will be played so bring along your prototypes! (Still possible but probably really annoyingly difficult :p We can do Tabletop Simulator if you want to set that up... I've been playing a ton of Tabletop Simulator from home lately!)

If you intend to attend, please indicate so on the Facebook event (Not mandatory, so don't worry if you don't have/use Facebook): https://www.facebook.com/events/678685199613195/

If you are interested in giving a talk or demo for a meetup, drop a reply in the thread with what you'd like to do or send me a PM :)

Feel free to ping me for any questions.

See ya'll there!

Comments

  • The FB event seems to be 2 May instead of 12 May. Probably just a copy-paste error?

That's right! I fixed it, thanks for the headsup!

  • Thanks for the update @Tuism. Signed up.

Are you going to be sharing the zoom channel later or just adding us to the call?
  • The email for the meeting should have gone out already, I got it, let me know if you don't have it!
  • I also dont have an email for the meeting and im sure its starting now
  • Hey @Yamkela2010 sorry I didn't see this! I hope you got the email eventually? I don't know what might have happened, if you filled the form in you should have gotten the mail! We're going to refine the system and hopefully this kind of thing doesn't happen again.
  • Thanks everyone for attending the new edition of MGSA meetup!

We had a pretty great meetup, with something like 22 in attendance. Had a great chat about various things and we later went to the MGSA Discord to hang out.

    Why Discord?
    - It does allow video sharing
    - It allows multiple channels so people can have separate conversations if they wish to
    - It allows 50 people per channel (they opened it up for more people because of C19)

In the discussion we had, we've decided that in future we're going to incorporate Discord more into the meetup - so we'll run the initial meetup on zoom, and move over to Discord after for socialising.

Which actually begs the question - why not just run the whole meetup in Discord?
    - Zoom has a full web client (Discord too but apparently we ran into some issues with accessing voice channels on web only)
    - Zoom has full host controls such as mute all just in case

If Hubs were bug free with this many people (up to 30 I guess), I would totally keep running things there, but as it is now, it's not a strong enough solution, unfortunately.

If anyone has any input on how to best run the meetup, let me know! :)

    See ya next month!
