Last year was amazing! Can't wait for this GGJ to go down!
  • The Vega kids really should join the main Joburg group ;)

Looking forward to another GGJ, our annual everyone-shows-up jam :)

    Foooooooooood :D

Let's see what kind of numbers we all have, I'm all for consolidation but MS is simply so very convenient :)
  • I'm from Durban and a very keen game developer. Still learning things as I go along. Is there anybody else in Durban that would like to team up.

  • Never been to Vega so I think I will give it a try - free food doesn't hurt :D

  • Whoa! Thorsten (of AMAZE) is one of the keynote speakers for GGJ this year !

Hey @AlbertB88. There definitely is a place for everyone! Please do come as it is a great place to start and to change from super noob to beginner and onwards. I'd suggest asking around for someone to jam with, and if you have some skill in art/programming/making coffee you can just help them out and you will learn a lot over the weekend!

Even if you feel you wont be able to contribute with your current skill set it is fine, there is always something that needs doing and we all have to start somewhere.

  • Hi All. A reminder that you need to register on the Global Game Jam site BEFORE the event. I know a lot of people who say they are going but that's not reflecting on the actual site - and we need accurate numbers please!
  • Why are there two JHB groups?
  • Guys thanks for your replies. So i can can program and do unity. What should i bring to the game jam. Like my laptop , A chair ? ect. And coffee.
  • @AlbertB88 That's great! It would depend on the jam site I believe. Feel free to ask in the respective location's thread. But in general yeah just whatever you'd need to develop on and what you would need extra. I believe most of our local sites will have desks and chairs available so you need not worry about that.
  • @PS89 The microsoft bryanston one is the usual central one, the other one is at vega, where their students like to be. But all are welcome on both ends :)
    Thanked by 1PS89
  • In case there is any confusion, everyone needs to register on the GGJ site AND sign up for the specific jam site (venue) that you will be attending. Please spread the word!
  • Hey guys. I plan to attend the JHB Microsoft GGJ. Can someone borrow me a screen for the weekend? I can't bring my monster screen along this year.

PM me if you can help out? Thanx :)
  • For the MS offices will I be able to bring my desktop? Don't have a way to use my tablet as a replacement anymore...

Also need to work out if I can still be in JHB then, currently not guaranteed for myself.

Don't see why not, there's plenty of space :)
  • Is there a facebook group for those going to the Microsoft location in Joburg ?

No group but there's an event:
    https://www.facebook.com/events/2067940266779848/?ref=br_rs

But besides the fb stuff, make sure you register at the official ggj site and put yourself into the joburg jam site. That's important.

  • General reminder to register on GGJ AND sign up for the jam venue you'll attend.
  • Wow, it's been ages since I've been to one of these.... I'm tempted.

  • So, can anyone help me borrow a screen for the event? Pretty please? :D
  • PS89. If you come through to the Vega Campus GGJ I think I might be able to help you out.

Hey Darth Fishy. I'm going with a friend from PTA, we are going to Microsoft :D
  • Unity has made a list of free assets for the GGJ2018: https://assetstore.unity.com/lists/global-game-jam-2018-free-assets-63987

  • So Microsoft offices, when are we meeting up?

    ~~//~~

Also, Game Maker Studio license sorted again finally (yay Steam), Unity working (free mode since my 3.0 license cant work and Unity support don't help at all), MonoGame, anything else I need?

Would anyone potentially want to use a completely new engine? Forgot about GGJ and started it yesterday (hopefully, I have it usable later today or early tomorrow). I am still debating the mish-mash of what I will add when I get it completely working for myself. I just wanted to challenge myself. (Currently only C++, hopefully after tomorrow will be C# and F support for "dev")

    ~~//~~

Also for everyone the Unity free assets are awesome but some people don't like Unity (I just don't like the license struggle I'm having) and prefer other engines so here is a dumb of assets you can go look at:
    - Itch.io
    - Game Dev Market
    - Kenney
    - Open Game Art

They fit tons of categories and art requirements for you but I can say it's just to have easy art for starting out and it makes GGJ more exciting when you build your own art and music as well.
  • Any news on the theme?
I'm not participating in the event unfortunately, but I'm hoping to work on something small with my friends from home, in honour of the GGJ.

We can't publicly post the theme until it has been announced world-wide, because the jam's starting is staggered. Hawaii is the last place to get started. I don't know the theme yet either :)
  • Aw, that's unfortunate, but fair. All the more reason to participate next year.
Just out of curiosity, there's not a way to find out privately, is there?
  • I'm saddened by not being able to join GGJ this year, have fun peeps.
  • The theme this year is "Transmission". Have fun y'all!
