  • Pinging @creative630 @kimardamina @Jason you fine people going to be having venues this year :D?
  • I'm excited to hear where this is (in the future)! Can't wait. I'm sure there are a few people that also can't wait!
  • As far as I know we are trying to find an alternative venue for CPT this year. UCT won't be an option next year sadly.
    Thanked by 1dammit
  • I just approved a site in George here
Still a few more days to get new sites in so hoping for CT and Pretoria to get in last minute.
    Thanked by 2Fengol dammit
  • So nice to see the changes! Can't wait - can be in teams with people (or on my own so dont worry) - lets go guys! We can do it!
  • Any updates if you are getting a site for Cape Town? I am travelling around the world to visit GGJs in different countries and already booked my flights for Cape Town this year. :D

I think I'll apply for the George site if Cape Town site seems unlikely.
  • I've registered the CPT site for the Bandwidth Barn as a venue. Please note, however, that the venue is NOT CONFIRMED at this point in time and all details are SUBJECT TO CHANGE. Keep an eye open for email communication, posts on the forum etc.

Site has been approved, so please do sign up and join so we can get an idea of number of attendees

  • Any volunteers for making posters?

  • I'm actually working over Christmas, so my time's a bit scarce. (Flights back to SA cost more than double during December, so I'm moving my holiday to mid January instead.)

I'd far prefer someone else does it, but I can make a quick one this weekend if nobody else steps up.
  • Turns out that GGJ offers a poster template, so I just used that because of time.

PSD template if you need to edit it: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/9847316/GGJ Poster Template.7z

George poster: I didn't make one, because the jam link seems to take me to a Page Not Found, so I don't have an address.

  • I saw the George one on the Global Game Jam Facebook page.

Thanks so much! If anyone has access to colour printers in CPT, please will you (closer to the time when everything's confirmed) print out a couple to put around UCT and the venue?
  • Is it just me or are those dates wrong on the posters?

UGH. Poop, you're right. :P I fixed it, then my PC blue screened, and then I forgot to change it back again. I'll fix it and re-upload in a bit.

[edit] I've updated the jpg links.

  • Been ages since I've done a game jam. I'm keen to join in on some JHB projects. I'll try make it to venue this time as well!

  • A reminder to please sign up for the Cape Town leg. We're trying to figure out numbers for our potential sponsors and venues.

Fixed the URL :) first time that I've seen someone from SA change it >_<
  • Super Excited to be joining the group at George :)
I am a GGJ Virgin, Do i need to bring a laptop or anything else?

You need to bring anything that you'd need to be part of a team to make a game. If you need a laptop, yup. If you need pen and paper than bring that :)

  • Hello All.

I know its late, but I've registered my lab as a game jam site. We have loads of VR equipment and space. Pull In.
    http://globalgamejam.org/2017/jam-sites/tenebris-lab
  • @ddutchie the site is showing as not available for me, guessing it's still pending approval from the RO. Just bump when that comes through :) don't really want to add a site to the list that people can't just click to, but excited for more venues \:D/
  • Quick question for those with better memory than I. We've managed to get sponsorship for prizes for CPT. What are the categories we usually have?

    Best Sound
    Best Art
    Most Fun
    Best Overall
    Best Boardgame (if there is)

    Anything I'm missing?
  • I'm patiently waiting on the approval. We will still be jamming from there regardless!! Hopefully they will open it up else I will make a poster with directions for those who want to join us.
  • @dammit I think we've had "Best Theme" before, for the game that best incorporates/represent the GGJ secret theme...

Though it's the second game-design related prize on the list then (after "Best Fun")... If there's too many prizes we could combine the two with "Best Game Design", which follows the "Best Art" and "Best Sound" pattern.

Hi @dammit. I'm not sure if this is generally known but prizes that would encourage competition are discouraged for the Global Game Jam. You might have to find other ways to present those.

Hey @ddutchie. Since your site is pretty close to Bandwidth Barn, why not merge with them? That way everyone can enjoy the experience without having to decide which jam to go to.
  • Unfortunately, Pretoria will not have a venue this year but we will join the Johannesburg venue.
I am an ambassador of a platform called AirConsole which allows you to create WebGL multiplayer games that use mobile devices as controllers for the game. It is pretty exciting and very interesting as a platform.
I am open to give a quick intro to developers that will be interested to build multiplayer games for this GGJ.
You can have have a look at : https://developers.airconsole.com/#!/ and https://developers.airconsole.com/#!/global_game_jam
I hope we can have some cool games as this platform also has some cool opportunities to publish your games right after the GGJ on their platforms.
Any interested can contact me before or on the day for more details... :)
  • For the venue in Cape Town, at The Bandwidth Barn in Woodstock, can jammers bring some of their own multiplug adapters and extension cables (if you have some spare).

There's always a bit of a shortage of plugs at The Bandwidth Barn.
    Thanked by 1dammit
  • @Karuji Jam site is up!
    Thanked by 2Karuji LadySith
  • @ddutchie updated :) hope you have a cool jam and looking forward to some interesting VR stuff :D!
  • So excited for this weekend! Will still be on my way home from work during the keynote/theme reveal but will pull through to the Bandwidth Barn ASAP :)
  • Yo all. I wanted to try pop into Microsoft to try and say hi to the peeps but my weekend is becoming increasingly full with studio recordings and music video plans. If anyone needs some music and/or SFX for this jam drop me a PM or even just send me an email to tim@jumpshipmusic.co.za (haven't used that email for a while so if I don't respond it's probably not working then try Timjh8@gmail.com)

I'm excited to try make some interesting music!

  • Confirming that the Bandwidth Barn is our venue in CPT for the weekend. We're very grateful to them. You'll be able to sleep over. Bring extension cords as mentioned above. And bring money for food. Also, bring your own mug. There will be coffee dispensed but I'm not sure on the cup situation and polystyrene is bad for the environment :D

@Karuji I assume the internet is sorted for the people that have registered for the JHB jam at Microsoft or is then any further information required? In previous years it wasn't a case of rock up and get internet so I'm just confirming that people will have access.

Also what's the deal with access/security clearance?
    Thanked by 2CodeCthulhu Tuism
  • @ProjectX since GGJ have updated how SOs can get info, we just pull it from that for MS :) our 'person on the inside' says that it is all good :D

btw they should be giving us some free food

I know it's late in the day, but if possible to add these to our posters. Amazon in Cape Town is sponsoring a large amount of money for food and things :) There'll be amazon swag at the Bandwidth Barn tomorrow night so please do show your appreciation.

@dammit , is there a schedule/programme for tonight? I ask because I will only be able to make it at 6pm or so.
  • Hi, if I don't make it to the JHB venue tonight, will I be able to do the JAM remotely?

I do want to start the process as soon as possible. I'm aiming for 5:30 but we'll see. You should arrive in time for the keynote and theme :)

Generally speaking, the Global Game Jam does not encourage remote work. I think the idea is towards collaboration and meeting people.

Nothing actually stops you from jamming remotely, but of course that's a consolation prize for if you can't make the venue. But please do try to make it! Always an excellent vibe! :)
  • I've jammed remotely many times. Going to the venue is all good and well for programmer but for musicians I can't cart all my gear and studio to Microsoft for a weekend. My keyboard is full size and I don't have the cash for a fancy laptop so if jamming remotely is disencouraged I dunno what I've been doing for the past 4 years.

At the same time you still come through to the venue to engage with us guys so that's rad :)
  • Totes! Just saying it shouldn't be shameful to work remotely if you have no option... if you can make it and don't however then yeah you should be coming through for the vibe :D
  • Oh quick question. I'm looking for the link to sign up and can't find it.... maybe I'm just looking badly.... can someone direct me in the right direction?
  • There is nothing happening in Durban, right? (I assume so, just asking in case)

No physical venue but doesn't mean you can't jam anyway :)

    Did you try this?

<3 absolutely. I dunno, I'm just giving you the official line as I'm supposed to.

I guess as long as you're collaborating with people at a venue, then it's all good, since you're meeting the collaboration goal.
