[SOLVED] Purchasing An Online Game Dev Course

edited in Questions and Answers
Hi guys,

I saw an ad for an online game dev course that has been discounted, and I'm in two minds about purchasing it, and I would really appreciate some insight or advice.

I've been interested in game dev for a long time, I have participated in two game jams, but I don't have any formal/academic training in any game dev related fields primarily because I don't have the money to pay for a full course.

Here is a link to the course: http://bit.ly/2hxuNF0

Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Alright so I bought this about I'd say 2 years ago now. As a complete noob when it comes to unity and programming etc. It was really helpful to get a basic understanding of unity and how things fit together. Which subsequently helped me a lot during game jams. I never actually finished all the sections, I think I got about halfway. But from my experience with the first half. It was really good and well worth it. It is aimed at people with little to no knowledge which can be a good and a bad thing. It gave me enough to head off on my own and understand enough to try new things and understand other tutorials a lot better. Sometimes you can follow a tutorial - end up with something by following along, but not really understand everything you did to get to where you are. This course is definitely more geared to building an understanding rather than just step by step creating.

  • Thanks man, this was a really helpful answer.
  • The fact that you are in two minds about purchasing it tells me that you don't have a lot of money to waste so I would personally advice you to rather look for free courses than buying those online as I also own that course but I felt that some of the free courses out there are 100x better.

Here are a few that I personally found very useful.
https://unity3d.com/learn/tutorials/projects/space-shooter-tutorial (One of the first and most useful ones I did)
    https://unity3d.com/learn/tutorials/projects/survival-shooter-tutorial
    https://unity3d.com/learn/tutorials/projects/2d-roguelike-tutorial

ALL of Sebastian Lague's (South African) videos. He has brilliant tutorials but it might be a little more intermediate than beginner but not hard to follow along

https://unity3d.com/learn/tutorials - This page has a lot of subcategories that can help you with individual pieces of Unity when you get stuck

    Hope this helps :)
