I think it is a great move. T3D is a bit behind the big guys such as UDK and Unity so the best thing they could have done is to make it open source. They should just make sure the documentation is up to date constantly because imo that is the achilles heel of open source software.

Or they should make a decent move to offloading documentation to community members that are willing to volunteer. I've seen the model work for several large OS projects.
