  • A lot of very pretty stuff there, welcome!

I love the sword-gun at the end of your concept art!
  • Looking good! :) Your digital stuff seems to have a very traditional influence. :)

Regarding the thumbnail thing for the Pencil category, I think you have stronger pieces in there to use as the thumbnail.
  • Nice stuff, I like the bullets and sword concepts.
  • Thanks for the feedback! And Elyaradine I was actually planning on removing the pencil stuff as there doesn't seem to be much of a demand for it. And the traditional look comes from my traditional background.
  • Jean Roux did some of the card art for System Crash, I can confirm that he's a pleasure to work with. :)

I dig those helmet UI illustrations, Jean! And the lady slicing robots!

  • Howdy Kidult and welcome to Makegames :)
  • Oh hey Gareth and thanks for the good reference and Hey Gibbo, nice to see some familiar faces..er..avatars around here :)

  • Some really lovely stuff!

I agree with @Elyaradine that the 'thumbnail' for the pencil should be changed. I wouldn't remove the category completely like you suggest though. You have some lovely work in there, you should just be more selective about what goes in. You open and close the section with weaker images, while the ones in the center are very strong. I would suggest just removing the first, third and last image, open with image 4, close with image 5 (your strongest to 'hold' the portfolio). On image 8 the legs of the beast bother me, and some of them could use greater tonal variation.

The illustrations and concept are are fantastic. For sake of putting your best foot forward, I would change the 'thumbnail' (what are those called?!) for Illustration as well, and use a clip form image 1 or 2.

    :)
  • Thanks for the feedback there Hanli. I made some of the changes you suggested for now but I'l most likely still scrap the pencil section as the only request for pencil work I ever had was to draw some figures for a guy who was going to do sculptures for a gallery exhibition. I'd rather add some UI stuff I'm working on to broaden my services.

Here is a new portfolio piece, not going for anything too fancy, pose / composition wise. Just need to add more fantasy stuff and figured I'd start simple:

  • Man really good stuff, if I can just give onnnnne little bit of input, that halberd is just looking a *tad* flat, the angles on them are all going directly left and right, it's like a piece of cardboard. If you can just bend the lines back a *tad* to give the halberd the mass it should have it'd be AWESOMEBALLS :D

But very good work otherwise :D
  • I really, really liked your pencil illustrations. I found that some of your artworks differed in quality, but overall, this is some high quality stuff. You're talented :D
  • Thanks 1995499 and Tuism (yes gotta fix that damn blade...)

Going to do some art dumping from now on, just to show some of the studies I do and other extra bits:

so been busy with concept art work so not much to show apart from some studies and bits:

so more stuff in between work, which I wish I could show as it would be of more interest seeing as it's all concept art and in game art... :/

  • Wow some really awesome work here. I hope you get exposed to more developers. We need games made out of all of these! :D
  • I've said this before, often, but I lovelovelove your studies! :D

If you're keen on doing more concept art, then I think it would be fantastic if you did the same kind of studies that you do with anatomy, on something that you have to design, like studying how a fictional creature would move, or options for what a character might wear in different places in a fictional world, or so on.

  • I love what Feng Zhu does with his class. He takes 2 random pop culture ideas, combines them, then gets his students to build locations and costumes for them.

So, for example : "Pirate" + "Dragon Hunter", and then you have to draw the Pirate Dragon Hunter's trophy room, their sleeping quarters, etc.

Gets people to focus on the "concept" part of concept art, not just drawing well. And it's extremely awesome. :D

  • We should totally do that :) There's that Daily Spitpaint facebook group which kiiiinda works in the same spirit. Every day, there's a theme of a few words, and you must draw something in 30 minutes. 30 MINUTES! Some of the work from that is truly glorious, and many of them conceptually mind-blowing too (not just skill :) )
  • Yeah, the fb Daily Spitpaint group is also lots of fun. I'm sad I haven't found the time to participate the last month or so, even just for the 30 minutes.

  • Nice work , really good hand drawings, keep drawing , you well on your way
  • @BologniusMaximus - Thanks man! I'm busy working for http://www.n-fusion.com/ at the moment so hopefully in a few months time I'l have more stuff out there!

@Elyaradine - Thanks man, I'm quite aware of that (it's like concepting 101) and have done lots of that, just not newer stuff that reflects my current skill level. And also I've been doing 90% concept art so far this year, everything from aliens, to military vehicles, battlefields and fantasy stuff. That said I don't do any creature stuff so I did some dog studies and applied those

@garethf @Tuism - I'm not a big fan of the 30min group, love the cool art the pros make but don't like the message it sends to newer artists. It's a very restrictive exercise that's almost impossible to do without a fair amount of art skills. I've been enjoying this group more: Super Speedpainting Funtimes https://www.facebook.com/groups/290666247749801/ It's 50min and no restrictions on photos / techniques

@watson - Thanks and yup arting everyday, all day!

then some concept art stuff, was meant to be for my portfolio but I got caught up with unit ideas instead of just designs for one dog so I'l do variations on the next set. Also done as if for a fantasy rpg / mmo game. This is also how I show my ideas to clients. A linework piece and a very rough colour piece:

  • So big art dump here, did a 30 image challenge all relating to a fantasy RPG. Tried out some photo texture use on some of the imagery:

  • This stuff is getting amazing! You sure you're only one person?
  • Is this just art dump? I am sure you could use these ideas to make a whole game!
  • Love the troll.
  • Ha, love your art dumps. You're kicking ass! :) I really like the richness in the colour on the troll.

I think the only real crit I've got is that when you're doing a whole bunch of different variations on something, I think it's important to try and vary them by quite a lot. When your variations are very slight, it makes it less helpful to discuss which options are stronger than others. I'm saying this particularly in reference to the knives and axes, where the silhouette changes are sometimes quite subtle.
  • Thanks guys! And Elyaradine, yeah I had an idea in my head for it and ended up just making slight alterations. Should've done a before one with bigger variations. Always next time!
