Dark Project(Work in Progress)

edited in Projects
Hi all, i would just like to take this opportunity to tell you about the project we are working on for Android devices.

It is a sci-fi survival rpg set way into the future.

You play a startrooper sent to investigate the dissappearance of a research team sent to the planet Deltora
to determine the possibility of the planet being inhabitable. Apon your arrival, you soon learn that
something has gone horribly wrong and need to face the darkness equipped with weapons and your trusty
flashlight and search for the team fighting off mutants and zombies.

The game has been in development for about a year now and i hope to release it by december this year.
The game is currently going through testing and is about 90% complete.

There has been some confusion in the past regarding the studio name which was called Carbon Games(Started in 2011), but due to there being another studio in america(Started more or less the same time), i decided to change the name(>_<) Hopefully for the last time! lol. I apologize for any confusion this may have caused.

  • Cool :)

Got any gameplay video for us to peek at? I can't really tell if it's a sort of semi-top-down twinstick shooter or a third person game from your screenshots, how are you finding aiming working for your players?
  • Thanks for the reply.... Btw... Big fan! :-D

You hit the nail on the head. Its a semi-top-down twin stick shooter if anything. The aiming is a bit of a tricky story and we ran into a few issues. Also being my first unity project, it was a lot of trial and error.
There was now way to to tell were the bullet might go when shooting. Despite the smooth aiming model(by rotating the right joystick) the only way to keep it easy for the player was to stick with the lazer on the character. We tried removing it but it was just too frustrating.

The second thing was to increase the size of collision cones on the enemies.

And lastly... When shooting a zombie, the best way to show a good hit was for the zombie to squirt a bit of blood:-)

So far there are not many complaints about the aiming. However there are a few things I have in mind that I want to work on. So stay tuned! I am trying to to get some game play footage but im struggling to find an app that doesnt require root access! Maybe I should just root my phone and be done with it? Lol. I'm going to try and post some game play footage within the next few weeks.

    Thanks for the reply.
  • Hmm. Is there any reason why you're not simply handling firing and aiming by tapping directly on enemies? I'd imagine that elements of your HUD would get in the way at the moment, but truth be told, they look like they get in the way right now ;)

Non-direct aiming on touch devices always feels pretty weak... Left thumb for strafing, swipe main area to turn, tap main area to shoot, tap/drag your character for special abilities or inventory management, etc.
  • Mmmm... definately something to keep in mind. The HUD doesnt bother the players that i can tell, however maybe the HUD can be simplified. The idea you gave me is to touch the character to handle the inventory(or weapons). I am going to test it out and see how well it works, but it sounds like a great idea. Thanks!

Would Steam be the primary service for distributing games for the PC? Are there any other services available?
