  • It's been a while since we had any audio talks, hasn't it?

    /hint ;)

I'd like to start a monthly mini talk, about 10 - 15 minutes or so, where I break down why the design of a game is so good, and then we have a brief discussion about how others feel about the game.

I feel this would be valuable because it would ensure we always have a design talk every month; it would expose everyone to new games (hopefully); and we would all benefit from analysing the design of games :).

I would keep the game selections as eclectic as possible and perhaps we could rotate who does the talk every month :).

I would start this month with Vlambeer's Ridiculous Fishing :D:

Would anyone be interested in this?

Also, @Elyaradine, do you mean in the vein of the Journey Talk last month, or community talks? :)
    Thanked by 2hanli creative630
  • @Bensonance, I love that idea. Although I'm not so sure about the "brief" discussion part :P. If I understand @Elyaradine correctly he means an actual AUDIO talk...as in about audio. But he should correct me if I'm wrong about this.

I would like to try and finish my talk about 10 things every game need this month(I'm sorry for missing last month's meet).
  • Yeah, I was hoping @Tim_Harbour or @creative630 or Allen or Ben or <YOU, DEAR READER> could chip in. :)

@Rigormortis, ah that makes more sense!

Maybe @Tim_Harbour would be up to doing something? I'll message him to see if he would be interested :).
  • Oh my word... that trailer is so badass!
  • I've just found out about Gunpoint.

Seems to be one of those games that hit the golden indie formula:

I think it's quite inspiring, maybe someone should talk about it :)

About sound: I'll ask Andrew Smith (a Wits MA working on game sound) if he could come in and do 20 mins on his research? It has a very practical bent, so it would be of use to all I think?
    Thanked by 1Bensonance
  • Great! :)

    @Nitrogen: Are you volunteering? :D
  • @Nitrogen, @Elyaradine,

sure does sound like that to me. :P
  • I don't mind talking Ben, though I suck at it so I would have to be prepared :P Otherwise if Andrew wants to do a talk that's also rad. Either way is cool with me. I'll be at the meet anyway.

And also...Gunpoint looks awesome, saw it yesterday...and epic fishing game looks epic!
  • Maybe I'm just an emo hippy but with the current over fishing crisis I think epic fishing is pretty insensitive to our Sea Kitten friends. http://features.peta.org/PETASeaKittens/

  • @Nitrogen You should talk about it! I love Gunpoint, downloaded the demo last week and my mind exploded :D.

@Tim_Harbour Alright, I'll put you down for it unless Hanli contacts Andrew :). Honestly, we're easy, if you keep playing cool music at us, we'll be happy :D. You could even just talk about your thesis a little bit, perhaps?
    Thanked by 1Tim_Harbour
  • Cool I can do that. That sound good to me :D I'm writing my proposal atm so that's something I could probably waffle on about :P
  • Are we gonna show the Windows 8 jam Games?

Why is that even a question? Man wish I was there!

@Rigormortis Yes that sounds like a good idea. I'll try chase down copies of all the games for the meetup and also for the Post Mortem thread.

EDIT: @DaveRussellSA Would you be comfortable doing this? Or shall Ed or I (Or anyone else who was at the Jam, who's up for it.) present the games?
  • Haha I wont volunteer this time, it'll be my first meetup with you guys. Maybe once I get into the groove of things :P
    Thanked by 1Bensonance
  • @Bensonance I'm from a new startup company called Slingshot Games that specialises in marketing indie games. We'd really appreciate the opportunity to briefly speak at the meetup about how we can help devs launch their game onto the global market. And then would it perhaps be possible for our representative to speak as early during the meetup as possible? He's going overseas the following day and still needs to sort out some admin so we'd really appreciate that big time :)
  • @Droid No problem, I'll add you to the top of the agenda :).
  • Awesome :) Thanks :)
  • The Clash team has new Art things they'd like to share, if we have time?
  • @damousey, We should be able to fit you in, hopefully :).

  • Hey I didn't realise Gunpoint was done and out! GREAT SCOTTS!! :D
  • Hey guys we're caught in some hectic traffic, looks like there was an accident on the highway. We'll be there as soon as possible.
  • Ah, so that's what it was :)

Thanks all for a great meetup, looking forward to more CLASH stuff! Muchos excitement!
  • Hey! Us Cape Town folks would really LOVE to know about the top secret "CLASH" stuff as well!
  • I was taking a video of it before my phone died. I will coordinate with @Tuism to upload his video it
  • @aodendaal Well, that'd certainly hit the spot. But what I was hinting at is that it might be nice if the good folk of "CLASH" partook of community facilities (for the betterment of their own project and to the benefit of those of us that love brawlers as I do).
  • Was busy getting the file to a reasonable size to upload, should be able to get it up tomorrow. My gods iPhone recording sizes are MASSIVE.
  • Uncompressed video. It'll do that.
  • Finally up!

    Clash with Team Clash:
    Thanked by 1hanli
  • Glad to see Clash was well received, it's both terrifying and exciting to be working on the music for this with Ben (Behemoth on LegionInk)... getting quite an education on Heavy Metal at the same time! :)
