[Event] Cape Town community meet up : 30-01-2013!

edited in Events
When: Wednesday the 30th of January, 2013. Starts at 18:30, ends at 21:00 (although socialising afterward is encouraged)!

Where: Microsoft offices, Engen building 2nd floor, Golf Park, Mowbray.

What: A monthly meetup for anyone and everyone interested in making games of any shape, size or type. Come join us!

Suggestions:

-We'll have just finished the Global Game Jam, so any and all GGJ game demos and super-mini 5 minute post-mortems are more than welcome!
-The OUYA competition has also just ended, so who's got games to show us from that?
-Any topics/videos people would like to see or hear about?

(I'm checking with Mxit about schnacks)

  • Glad this is happening :)
  • If we're short on content this month, I could probably whip up a presentation on minimizing memory churn in managed environments... if it wouldn't bore too many non-programmers to death.

  • Awesome! so glad this is happening :)

I'm signing into Res at UCT the previous day however I'm going to try my hardest to be there. Should one bring thier own computer/Laptop if they want to show their game or just a hard drive with copies of the game on it?

    Thanks!

  • Bring a laptop if you can with the game files etc. Other people do bring computer so if you can't it shouldn't be a problem :)
  • @LexAquilla Thanks! I think I'm going to try organize a laptop I can borrow or I might just bring my computer haha :)

I'd love to see all the Global Game Jam games demoed!

If there is time I could do a post-mortem about our OUYA Create entry.

(also, would it make sense to demo any of the Joburg Global Game Jam games? ...I mean if they wanted them shown off)

Would love to see Atomic Domb's Pixel Boy shown off there too!
  • @BlackShipsFilltheSky, please have like first play videos or something on the Joburg GGJ games. I would love to see everyone's reactions to the games we made :D

  • @BlackShipsFIlltheSky I'm going to be bringing everything (computer and the game haha) to the event so that could do :)

I'm so stoked to meet everyone and get feedback on games and talk game dev :)
  • @atomicdomb Which res are you going into? Because I'm going into Kopano and they have a bunch of orientation activities at the same time as the meetup. Unless you're too excited to see the Cape Town people to care about orientation :P
  • @D3zmodos I'm going to College House :P They probably have some orientation stuff as well but I'm sure it's not tooo serious :P Besides Science Faculty stuff ends around 4:30 haha ill take it as it comes eh :)
  • I think it would be great if each group could do a quick post-mortem of their game. Just a few minutes. These jams are awesome opportunities for learning experiences and suspect most people picked up on a few things worth sharing.
  • Hey ya guys, we have progress to show on BlockBoy, not much but some, which happens to be a non GGJ, OUYA entry, but it is still a game. Does it still qualify for playing/viewing at tomorrows meet?
  • Demos and prototypes of any games for any platforms made for whatever reasons are always welcome :-)
  • Bring everything you'd like to demo :)

Right now I'm thinking we'll have a rapid-fire GGJ postmortem session: each team gets 5 min to talk about what they learned/enjoyed/hated/ate. After that it's demos as needed.

I might have more of the Sportsfriends games tonight, but I'm not sure if we'll have time to talk about those ;)
  • Oh no just saw this now. Im kicking myself right now for missing it ;(
  • Damn, missed it. I don't check the forum for a week and this happens... derrg.
  • Last Wednesday of every month, Jan-Nov.
