Where: Microsoft offices, 3012, William Nicol, Bryanston.

There are some videos on the Vault that I've seen recently that I'd like to show, specifically one on the design that went into creating social interactions in Journey. :)

If there are any topics you're interested in, I can look for talks on them too. If the talk is <30 minutes (or, alternatively, is <1 hour, but ABSOLUTELY MINDBLOWINGLY AMAZING) then maybe we can watch that at a future meet.

I wonder how fast the internet is at MS, whether we could stream it from there, or if I somehow have to do some caching magic beforehand.

Comments

  • Is there a talk about the art behind journey? Shaders and tech used to make it look the way it did and stuff.
  • Are you sure there's a meet in January? I got an email from the DeveloperUG community saying they got notified by Microsoft that there's no Community Night next month.

Can someone please confirm the event?
  • @aodendaal: I'm not actually sure. :P I just usually get mails about it, and haven't gotten any (yet?), so I don't know whether there is one. I've pinged Dave, and will let you know when I get a reply.

@Stray_Train: Couldn't find anything unfortunately; the only ones I found were on social interaction, on the music, and on production. And although there are articles discussing the visuals from an academic perspective, I didn't see anything about the tech.

If there's something in particular you're wondering about, I'm sure Luke could offer advice. While they did write their own engine, I suspect that they didn't do anything revolutionary tech-wise, so much as having an awesome art director and great artists working on the game. :)
  • To expand on Journey, I though it parallels with their previous game Flower really well, and the effects in there are also pretty mind-numbing - not in terms of tech, but the technique, artistry and direction :)

@Elyaradine I've always wanted to know how to put together a desert scene. The modelling techniques involved, how to project normal maps onto the ground (footsteps, sliding sand), the material setup, color palette and the post processing involved.
  • Dave will probably be back in office tomorrow, but I will send him an sms.

I saw a really good video on the art design of Journey a while back, it wasn't technical at all, but it explained quite a lot of their choices as a whole for the game.
  • I have just received word from Dave that there is no meet at Microsoft for communities this month, we can however make an alternative plan?
  • Maybe hold off for January and get all the entries and games from GGJ and Wits Boardgame Jam to show off in Feb?

Got the mail this morning. Oh well. In that case you can check the video out yourselves. :) It's one of the free videos.

  • So today's meet's not happening right? Should edit the OP to reflect?
