Google Round Table JHB and CT

edited in Events
Hi All,

I've been invited by Google South Africa to attend and participate in a round table discussion on regulating the internet and how it affects foreign investment. I'll be talking on what I see as the two biggest policy issues facing Game Development:

> The Films and Publications Board and
> Exchange Control Regulations

and arguing that both of these areas need to be deregulated to promote better growth in the industry.

I've been asked by Google to send the invite to IESA members and the Make Games community, if you can make it it will be awesome to see you there!:

Roundtable Invitation: The Impact of Internet Regulation in Investment in South Africa
In a study commissioned by Google in 2015, Fifth Era (http://www.fifthera.com/) surveyed more than 450 investors in developed and developing economies in Asia, Africa and the Middle East in order to assess the degree to which the legal environment might impact the investment climate in those economies, particularly relating to Internet businesses.

South Africa was among the countries considered in the study. The remainder of the developed and emerging economies which were considered in the study are Australia, India, Indonesia, Israel, Japan, Korea, Nigeria, Saudi Arabia, Thailand, Turkey, UAE and Vietnam.

The study considers how Internet regulations in these countries impacts on the investment climate – taking into account both local investment and overseas-based foreign direct investment (FDI) into these countries. It includes surveys of the investors of the analysed countries as well as parallel surveys in the UK and the US, in order to additionally evaluate the impact on FDI with regards to American and European investors.

The outcomes of the study are contained in the report, which can be viewed at https://goo.gl/GbGxh3.

Google South Africa and Ellipsis Regulatory Solutions will be launching this report in South Africa, on 5 May 2016 in Johannesburg at the Radission Blu Gautrain and on 6 May 2016 in Cape Town at the WhiteSpace Venue. The launch event will include a presentation on the report by Matthew C. Le Merle from Fifth Era, as well as representation from policy-makers.
