Ben Prunty's super beginner music-makin' kit

I know there are game musicians (both prospective and pro) lurking around these forums, so I'll leave this here. Ben Prunty, who did the FTL soundtrack, is really open about his workflows and the tools he uses, which is excellent for those of us who dabble with game music. How very Indie of him. :P He recently pointed Twitter followers to this blergh post he wrote regarding music and production tools for beginners:
